Why are people more disturbed with crossdressers and transsexuals than people who are just simply gay?
It just seems to me that hate crimes are common when associated with crossdressers and transsexuals. It doesn't seem to occur as often with gay people.

- I just wish that we could live in a world where hate was not a problem. I do believe they should be allowed to wear whatever they like and this is their choice how they dress. Too bad people just have a hard time accepting them. I am ok with crossdressers and transgendered people I just wish more people would be too. They too have similar struggles to us as gay people and if anything sometimes I often wonder if they may have it worse off because once you transition your body there is no going back.
- Gay people and gender variant people both suffer hate crimes. The reason is because people are afraid. They're afraid of diversity. They're afraid of change. They're afraid THEY could change. They're afraid of being rejected for accepting people who are different. The absurd part is that gay and gender variant people have existed throughout our existence. In some societies and cultures, this diversity was celebrated, but it most, it was hated and feared, so gay and gender variant people had to hide. As the world modernized, and civil rights became more protected by law, gay and gender variant people were no longer satisfied to hide in the shadows. At first, it was just as bad for gay people as it still is for gender variant people, but as homosexuality has become more understood and visible in society (heck, there are prime time TV shows with gay characters who are truly loved by their audiences) ignorance has diminished, and when people understand something, they don't fear it (usually.) When they admire something, they protect it. There are still plenty of vicious, bigoted people who hate both groups, but the typical person has become more or less tolerant of homosexuality, because they realize it exists, homosexual people can't change, they're not going away, and they deserve the same protections as everyone else. Gender variant people are just now beginning to get these rights, but since such people are only now emerging to become visible and make their voices heard, the haters are in panic mode because they will no longer be able to hate them, so they ramp up the violence in a last ditch effort to keep their bigotry in society alive. Eventually, they will go the way of the dinosaur, and all people will be free to express their sexuality and gender as they desire, but we've still got a ways to go.
- I suspect it's because we call into question some basic assumptions about what it means to be male and female. Gays and lesbians do that as well, but in a much less threatening way. I mean, look at the major complaints leveled against us (when you strip away the major stupidity, I mean). One of them seems to be the fear that some straight guy will be attracted to a transwoman without knowing who she was - which somehow translates to turning them gay, and please don't ask me how. We get a lot of people here complaining about transwomen trying to "trick" unsuspecting straight guys into relationships, I suppose so we can put another notch on our lipstick cases or something. I think it's increased quite a bit lately since Chaz went on DWTS. God bless him, he had every right to do so and I'm glad he's out there, but the lists for the Day of Remembrance show a marked uptick in deadly violence against transpeople since that was announced. We usually lose about 400 a year, world wide. This year, we're over 600 and it's not even November yet. So: fear, uncertainty, and the occasional moron. That's the best I can give you.
