How do you tell your family your gay and you want to be a transgender?

i have a friend from school whos obviously NOT STRAIGHT . and we talk about this and he wants to tell his parents , but their close minded. think its gross and sutff like that. he said he can imagine himself transgender. how would he be able to make his parents accept both of those things. does he just say, "im gay" . and then start wearing womens clothing and things like that little by little?

  1. Your friend needs to wait until he movies out on his own to tell his parents. Or he's going to have tough time
  2. Well if they are a transsexual woman and attracted to men that would make her straight, not gay. How old are we talking?
  3. Perhaps it would be best if he waited until he left home to tell them... Hmm... However, if he chooses to come out then he needs to make sure it's LITTLE BY LITTLE because a drastic change would freak his parents out even more.
  4. Being transgendered and gay are TWO different things; you cannot compare the two. Gay is having an attraction for someone of the same sex. Being transgendered means that you were 'born in the wrong body.' Also, age plays a huge factor... how old is your friend?
  5. If he does decide to come out to his parents, he shouldn't make it any more complicated than it has to be. He should just tell them he's gay, feels as though he was "born in the wrong body," and wants to be a woman. It might freak them out a little at first, but if they truly love him, they will learn to accept him for whom he is.
  6. Acceptance can sometime take time for some parents. Especially if they are not familiar or do not understand being transgender or transsexual and we have to take into consideration that they may have been indoctrinated by organized religion. There are many ways for your friend to go about this with his parents. If your friend feels more comfortable going about this at a steady slow gradual pace, than by all means, there is nothing wrong with that. Essentially, one thing that will make a difference is your friend understanding what it means to be transgender or transsexual. Transgender is a broad term covering all non-conforming traditional gender expressions. Transsexual is an individual whose gender and sex does not correlate and may seek hormone replacement therapy and/or surgeries to correct this difficult phenomenon. If your friend is transsexual, I think it is important to understand that women and men do not imagine themselves as transgendered or transsexual, they imagine themselves as the gender or sex they see themselves as. In addition, transsexuality or transgenderism has nothing to do with sexual orientation. Iike cisgendered individuals, transsexual or transgender people can be straight, bi, gay, or asexual. Your friend will definitely need your help through the accepting process. It may take a while, but continue being a good friend.
  7. He might just wanna wait til hes moved out or gone to collage so they don't think its a stage. When your in middle/high school they always say its a stage but when your in collage they will know its not. :]
